The mountains have been seen as a key feature of the island’s distinctiveness, especially since the time of Romantic travellers' writing. These mountains lavish Crete with valleys, such as Amari valley, fertile plateaus, such as Lasithi plateau, Omalos and Nidha; caves, such as Gourgouthakas, Diktaion, and Idaion, the NRL team lists and betting birthplace of the ancient Greek god Zeus,; and a number of gorges. It is located south of almost the rest of the country, in the southern part of the Aegean Sea separating the Aegean from the Libyan Sea. Another proposal suggests that it derives from the ancient Greek word „κραταιή” (krataie̅), meaning strong or powerful, the reasoning being that Crete was the strongest thalassocracy during ancient times.

Long ago, we ceased to keep track of the number of stalactite caves we’ve explored globally. To enjoy the palm grove in tranquility, simply stroll upstream beside the river. During our visit (we found Preveli beach to be rather busy), so we decided to walk through the palm forest upstream. This area is significantly less populated and provides a delightful contrast to the seaside town. On days with strong winds (a large number of tourists leave the coast to head into the city), resulting in the Old Town being busier than usual.
Cicadas (known locally as tzitzikia), make a distinctive repetitive tzi tzi sound that becomes louder and more frequent on hot summer days. The new road section forms part of the route between Messara in the south and Crete’s largest city Heraklion, which houses the island’s biggest airport and ferry links with mainland Greece. Its capital and largest city is Heraklion, located on the island’s north shore. When you remove your security key, you’ll be asked for confirmation.

Iconic ruins and culinary experiences in Eastern Crete.
- The stunning taverna terrace at Agreco Farm (situated just outside of Rethymno), provides unique farm experiences and tours.
- At midday during the peak season in July and August, the most popular attractions in Crete are utterly overrun!
- The drive from Chania’s airport to the town center takes about 20 minutes (revealing a blend of architectural styles that showcase the influences of various empires), including Venetian and Ottoman.
- We’ve provided more tranquil options for each highlight because (unfortunately), most of Crete’s major attractions tend to be very busy in summer.
International travelers are served by both the Nikos Kazantzakis airport in Heraklion and the Daskalogiannis airport in Chania. Crete plays a vital role in Greece’s economy and cultural heritage while maintaining local cultural elements, such as its own music and poetry. In 1898, the people of Crete, who desired to join Greece for some time, achieved autonomy under Ottoman rule, officially establishing the Cretan State. To the northeast of Crete lie the Dodecanese , whereas the Cyclades are located northward,, divided by the Sea of Crete. Positioned roughly 100 km, 62 miles, south of the Peloponnese and about 300 km (190 miles) southwest of Anatolia, Crete is geographically significant.

In our view, Heraklion stands out as the culinary heart of Crete. Equally impressive — this location is much less crowded and provides excellent guided tours in German. Located just 7 km south of Heraklion, and reachable by bus (Line 2) or rental car, we were guided in German, which was a compromise since only one of us could listen at a time. Such is life sometimes for a travel journalist.

In the 2nd century AD, at least three cities on Crete, Lyttos, Gortyn, and Hierapytna, became members of the Panhellenion, a federation of Greek cities established by Emperor Hadrian. Gortyn became the island’s capital, and Crete was established as a Roman province along with Cyrenaica, referred to as Creta et Cyrenaica.
